Case Study: Center for Digestive Health Finds Overall Efficiency Improvement with New Practice Management System, gPM
Center for Digestive Health (CDH), is a gastroenterology practice located in Willoughby, Ohio. In mid-2013 they made the decision to switch from MicroMD to gMed’s practice management system, gPM. Their team anticipated that moving to a solution which integrated their billing and scheduling with gGastro, gMed’s EHR, a platform that they were already familiar with, would increase their overall efficiency and allow them to send claims and receive payments faster.
Darlene Frankel, the practice administrator at CDH states, “We have been using the gPM platform since January of this year, and it has truly made our entire workflow and process so much more efficient”. Although the team had a slight learning curve at the beginning, as you would with any new system, they were able to quickly become well versed with the software and practically took themselves “live” due to the system being so user friendly. The team was able to improve their overall workflow using one system, versus two systems that were connected by an interface.
The practice has seen a significant improvement in their claim scrubbing process, since gPM allows the team to correct claims online before they are even submitted. CDH has also seen an increase in their collections. “The rate of collections with gPM has increased ten-fold for us. Our old system was a 30-45 day process in payments, with gPM our turnaround time is 17 days,” says Darlene.
The team at CDH was also pleasantly surprised with the additional time saving capabilities that came along with gPM. For example, for secondary (Medicaid) claims, a team member would have to manually enter them online, since their old system would not process those. However, now with gPM they can send them electronically and receive payment within 2 weeks, instead of 45 days which is what the waiting time used to be.
Another improvement CDH found with gPM was overall integration. “With our old system, we had to view the patient chart and the billing information in separate screens, and it was anything but seamless,” says Darlene. For CDH, being able to have one integrated system where the Electronic Health Record and the Practice Management system operate together, is a necessity. By using the fully integrated gGastro product, the practice has been able to refine and maximize their workflow, now that everyone is working out of the same system on one screen. This also allows their staff to reduce time spent on the phone scheduling and answering questions, so they can focus on caring for the patients within their office.
