Case Study: gGastro Makes Life Easier for Gastroenterology Clinic of Acadiana
Gastroenterology Clinic of Acadiana is a 3 physician, 3 nurse practitioner, 60+ employee practice located in Lafayette, LA. Like many practices, prior to converting to an Electronic Health Record the practice was having a difficult time with reading handwriting, filing lab reports and finding charts. Additionally, all offices and procedure notes were transcribed, so often times this delayed precertification and reviews of incoming lab results and other correspondence.
The practice chose gGastro to help resolve these problems. gGastro is designed to support the work flow, processes, and needs of a typical Gastroenterology practice — ensuring staff can quickly document patient evaluation and management encounters.
“gMed offers a system that is specific to gastroenterology, so you spend a lot less time with specific configurations,” said Mrs. Tasha Cieslak, Director of Special Projects at Gastroenterology Clinic of Acadiana. “gMed provides a seamless ONC-ATCB Certified product used by the endoscopy center and office and gives everyone a more complete record.”
After the gGastro implementation the practice not only noticed an increase in efficiency but also an increase in revenue. “The physicians can do more procedures in the same amount of time,” said Mrs. Cieslak. She further explained, “gMed was the only product that allowed a physician to take pictures during the endoscopy and have someone label the pictures at the same time without having to stop shooting images.”
One of the most important changes had to do with the patient chart. “By converting to an Electronic Health Record there is no need to find charts,” Mrs. Cieslak explained. By using gGastro, nurses and physicians can receive and manage all laboratory orders from the automated results management system in addition to documenting. “Most of our results come via interface so they are easier to go through and physicians are able to review them in a timely fashion which in turn allows patients to get their results faster,” said Mrs. Tasha Cieslak.
gGastro also allowed the practice to enhance clinical documentation without compromising productivity so physicians can focus on patient care. Mrs. Tasha Cieslak said, “Many people can access the same chart at the same time which speeds up seeing patients in the clinic as well as the endoscopy center. We are also able to automatically send correspondence back to the referring physician right when the visit or procedure is complete. The profile of a patient is updated at each visit and makes for a complete note.”
The physicians at Gastroenterology Clinic of Acadiana are very pleased with the results. Mrs. Tasha Cieslak mentioned, “We no longer have the ‘5 inch chart’ falling apart every time someone has to handle it. Our physicians really enjoy that after they are finished with patients, they have the option to log in from home to complete charting and reviewing labs instead of staying at the office after everyone has left. Physicians are able to access records from anywhere as long as they have a computer and access to the web.”
Prior to gGastro, Gastroenterology Clinic of Acadiana had to deal with many of the common issues every practice faces. Now physicians and office staff have the comprehensive tools they need to improve patient care, reduce costs and risks, and increase revenue. gGastro is the only application certified for Meaningful Use at the practice and ASC. Ultimately gGastro provides a solution that thinks like a Gastroenterologist and takes the focus off practice paperwork and puts it back on the practice of medicine.
